In a press release issued on Tuesday, Google introduced its latest venture, the 'Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First' program, which is now open for applications. This groundbreaking initiative is designed to provide essential support to African startups aiming to leverage the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) to address local challenges.
The program, spanning a period of 10 weeks and not requiring equity, welcomes startups at various stages, including up to the Series A stage. It is open to startups either based in Africa or those working on solutions tailored to the continent that utilize AI and machine learning technologies. The benefits for participants are extensive, ranging from access to Google's extensive AI expertise and technical resources - including up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits - to mentorship from experienced AI professionals, and a platform for invaluable networking opportunities.
The foundation of this initiative lies in acknowledging the global significance of AI as it transforms industries and expands the realm of possibilities. Notably, this program emphasizes the vital role that African startups play in tackling urgent challenges within the region by pioneering innovative AI applications. Google's commitment to promoting and amplifying solutions rooted in African innovation remains a core objective.
Folarin Aiyegbusi, Google's Head of the Startup Ecosystem for Africa, expressed admiration for the continuously evolving tech landscape across the continent. He commended the efforts of African startups for their adept use of AI in addressing unique challenges and for establishing new benchmarks that resonate globally. Beyond being a mere program, 'AI First' symbolizes Google's unwavering confidence in these startups and their potential, ensuring they receive the necessary backing and guidance for their growth.
Since its inception in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa initiative has played a pivotal role in nurturing the growth of 106 startups from 17 countries within the region. Together, these startups have secured a collective funding amount exceeding $263 million and have contributed to the creation of more than 2,800 direct job opportunities, thereby shaping the technological landscape in Africa and beyond.
